AUGUST in the Dahlia Patch

Updated: Oct 29, 2024

This month is all about soil! While the tubers are hibernating now is a great time to focus on improving you soil health in preparation for the next growing seasons.

CHECK THE pH

Now is a great time to do a little test to see what the current pH of your soil is so you can add things to adjust it if needed. Dahlia's tend to prefer a pH of 6.5-7, so slightly acidic. If your pH reading is too low and you need to increase the acidity animal manure and leaf litter do a great job. If your soil is too acidic and you need to lower the pH opt for some dolomite or agricultural lime.

IMPROVE THE SOIL

Adding plenty of organic matter to your soil during August will give it time to breakdown ahead of planting in October and November. Composted manures, leaves, compost and last years mulch are all great sources of nutrition for your soil.

PLANT A GREEN MANURE COVER CROP

Rather than leaving your soil exposed to the elements over winter, plant a green manure cover crop which can protect the soil. act as nitrogen fixers and later be dug into the soil before the flower to further improve it. Crops such as peas, tick beans and lupins are great.
