Sustainability

There are many things you can do around the garden and home that are very easy and will greatly reduce your environmental impact (some of them will even improve your garden!)

On this page you'll find some ideas and resources to help you make some sustainable swaps.

Easy swaps

COMPOSTING
&
WORM FARMS

There are many different ways you can turn your household waste into amazing fertiliser for your home garden with various composting methods and worm farms.

Pick the system that will work best for you, whether you have a very small garden with little room for a big compost bin, or if you have more space you may consider a larger scale option.

Many of our garden club members use not just one, but a combination of methods.

REUSE

Some plastics are unavoidable for the time being, so finding ways to reuse them will not only give them a purpose but also save you money.

Some of our favourite ways to reuse are keeping plastic containers like strawberry punnets, or clear iced coffee cups with the domed lids and use them as mini greenhouses to start seeds.

Things like larger yogurt or ice cream containers can be very handy for keeping seed packets organised and dry.

You can even use your finished toilet rolls are mini pots for starting seeds.

HOME ECO SWAPS

While not specifically garden related in the first instance, any reduction of the use of harsh chemicals, plastics etc in the home can have a large impact on our environment.

Some easy swaps inside the home include low-tox cleaners to minimise the chemicals that make it into our water ways.

Instead of buying dishwashing liquid, powders, shampoo, conditioners, body wash etc in plastic, you can purchase them in plastic free forms. Ditch baking paper for reusable silicone baking mats.

There are so many ways!

CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

When purchasing items for your garden, consider the material used and if there is a more sustainable option you could be choosing to reduce your impact.

For example, instead of choosing polyester or plastic clips for tying plants or creating trellises for climbers, consider buying one made from natural materials like jute, hemp or cotton.
